Tour of Pic’s Peanut Butter Factory, Nelson, New Zealand

Ever thought about visiting a peanut butter factory? Nope, neither had we! Our first stop on the South Island of New Zealand was Nelson, and, searching for things to do, we came across Pic’s Peanut Butter factory tour. Little man loves peanut butter, so we thought we’d give it a go, and we were really glad we did.

A warm welcome awaited us at the factory, from Pic (owner and founder) and all other members of staff too. Pic, himself, gave us the history of his peanut butter – from the humble cement mixer start-up in his garage, to the several factories that are now operating. After an introduction to the early days of Pic’s empire, we were shown around the factory floor, getting a first hand view of how the nutty goodness is made, bottled and boxed. At the end of the tour, we all got a tasting of peanut, almond and cashew butters, and all the kids even got to make their very own little pot of peanut butter. Little man was so proud of his and carried it round for ages like a trophy!

We were really pleasantly surprised that a peanut butter factory tour could be so much fun, and what made our visit extra special, was how great Pic was with little man, and indeed all of us. Pic happily sat talking to him, letting him play outside with his gorgeous dog, Fido. Pic even agreed to let little man put a Pic’s star logo sticker on Fido’s collar. This was backed up by a promise from little man of putting a sticker on our own dog when we returned to the UK. The roll of stickers Pic gave to little man, to complete his task, made it back to the UK with us and the picture of our dog, Buster, with the red star on him is below.

If you’re in the Nelson area of New Zealand, get yourself booked in for a tour, it’s a great way to spend an hour or so, it’s free, and, most importantly, the kids will enjoy it too. Don’t forget to stock up on your way out! 😉

If you’re in New Zealand, you’ll be able to get Pic’s peanut butter in most supermarkets, but unfortunately, you can’t buy Pic’s in the UK or USA currently. We could buy it on Amazon and at Tesco, but it’s currently unavailable at both sites.

Even though it’s a ‘thing’ that I used to make my sisters peanut butter rolls (peanut butter on bread, then rolled up tightly and chopped into slices, like a swiss roll) when we were younger, I can’t comment on the taste as it’s not my favourite thing in the world, but little man says it’s a seriously good peanut butter, which is surely due to the lack of unwanted added ‘extras’ and, most importantly, the love that goes into making every jar! We bought a jar after our tour, and then went through another jar too before we left NZ – that was two jars in three weeks.
